Curio, Pool Noodles, and a Bridge

Curio is available for sale, contact Kim at bitofhoneytraining@gmail.com to schedule a time to come meet him and watch him work.

Curio is doing well with wearing the pad and surcingle, so today I introduced dangling pool noodles from the rings on the surcingle.  We started with the regular routine of grooming first, then tacking up in the pad and surcingle.

Next we went to the arena and lunged a little, and then I added the pool noodles to his outfit.

He quickly realized (as the youngsters do) that if he touched the pool noodle with his nose he would get praise and a cookie.  This led to some thorough pool noodle snurffeling which resulted in lots of cookies.

Once the noodles were attached to each side I sent him back out on the lunge line, and we practiced walking and trotting with dangling noodles on each side of his body.

All that was no big deal, so lastly we added working on the bridge.  Curio had done the bridge when he was a yearling here last year, so this was mostly review for him.

He was really good today - such a quiet and smart baby horse.

I did also string test him today, which is a technique that is usually quite accurate for predicting a horse's final height.  I take a string and measure the distance from the point of his elbow to his ergot at the back of his fetlock.  Then I flip the string up and measure that same distance from elbow up.  That final height is usually how tall the horse will be when fully grown.  Curio measures right at 17h.  I've yet to use this technique and have it be inaccurate, so I fully expect him to reach that height!
